Jaffer Bhai's Delhi Darbar, Lokhandwala
6 and 7, Rendezvous Building, Ravi Raj Oberoi Complex, Sab TV Lane, Andheri Lokhandwala, Andheri West, Mumbai Phone No : 022 26321370 / 1373
2000 hours, 14th September 2014, Sunday:
1973. Jaffer Gulam Mansuri. Grant Road. The first Delhi Darbar restaurant.
Cut to 2014. Seven restaurants and one Outdoor catering outlet of the chain sprinkled all over the city. Something's definitely working for them right.
Their website www.jbdd.co.in displays some awards, some letters of appreciation and some press releases eulogizing this brand. But surprising is the fact that the portal itself sings paeans of the founder in an unrestrained manner. A careful look at the Company profile page reveals that its not about achievements or milestones, its just using about using extremely flowery language which simply goes on and on without laying a foundation for the same. For example, nowhere on the site did I find who had crowned Jafferbhai as the "Biryani King of Mumbai". Please tell me, where did this come from???
This particular outlet is located in one of the darkest bylanes of Lokhandwala complex - on the footpath. Its a open-on-the-roadside kind of eatery, without any glass facade or wooden doors, so you have the unwelcome noise and dust pollution filtering inside as you are having your food.

The inside of the restaurant though is splendorous, with attractive lighting and solid teak wood work. The wall boasts of a certificate from Times Food Guide and one "Burrp Certified" (heaven knows what that means...)
The place is bustling with a flurry of men in black servers and one old gent who is seemingly the captain. He is courteous and guides me through the menu card, but is a tad too enthusiastic in up sell.
This was a take away order, so I scanned the menu card for appropriate dish. The menu card here is quite a diminutive version of the normal Jafferbhai menu cards displayed on Zomato. Half of the about ten main course chicken items are bone in, so I had to settle for the only rest of the other half.
I ordered for a Murg - e - Nargis (INR 290) , a Chicken and capsicum dish cooked with cashew nut paste in light brown gravy. It looked like this.
The dish was superlatively premium. A brown thick gravy, allaying any fears of usage of artificial coloring agents. Diced chicken pieces and bits of capsicum with a boiled half egg sitting atop. The gravy actually had a delectable aroma of crushed cashew nuts.
The only spoiler was the oil quotient. My first glance of it took me aback and I shuddered to observe a thick layer of oil floating above the gravy. I had a tough time separating the two and by conservative estimates, the oil component was at least thrice as much as necessary.
Once that sorted out, the rest of the dish was heavenly.

Verdict: Unimpressive. The location is a big question mark, the food quality gets marred by the oil factor and the prices are not exactly a deal clincher. So just about average.
