K Rustom & Co, Churchgate
87 Stadium House, Veer Nariman Road, Opposite Ambassador Hotel, Churchgate, Mumbai Phone No : 022 2282 1768
2230 hours, 9th August 2014, Saturday:
K Rustom, with just a standalone outlet, has 137 reviews as of this date on zomato. This is the highest pro rata no. of reviews in the city. Which speaks volumes about this place.
So whats the fuss all about? Why are patrons going ga ga over it? What's the magic?
K Rustom has existed right from the British era. The legacy has continued unadulterated, uncorrupted and unswayed by the glamour and the commercial pull of the modern times. Cocking a snook at the today's age ice cream parlours with their swanky lights and neon lit signboards and computerised billing and "taxes extra" and synthetic flavors and one plus one offers and advertising blitzkreig, this parlour stands adamantly in its own right, sticking to its own traditional way of doing things, and not only getting away with it, rather thriving on it. A sweet simple Parsi lady at the counter, presumably one of the owners, quietly minding the affairs, simply adds up to the overall charm.

Enter this place. Zero ambiance. Talk to the attendants. Zero service. Look arond for a place to take a seat. Zero space quotient.
And then you get wowed by the products. You see a colour print out of the menu posted on the wall. You observe that they have about 50 flavors. Priced at INR 50, INR 60 and INR 70. You observe the glass topped cold storage refrigerator decked up with hundreds of butter paper wrapped ice cream slabs. And when you call for your favorite flavor, it is precisely fished out from there. And a quaint concept of offering these ice cream slabs sandwiched between two colorful wafer biscuits. You marvel.
We called for four flavors, Rum N Raisin, Coffee Crunch, Chocolate Nuts and Fruits and Mango. And each of these had actual fruit bits in it. The ice cream is ready to melt the moment it is out, and you would want to gobble it up quickly. The accompanying wafer biscuits not only add up to taste but also help handle the slab and also contain its melting. The taste per se is great, the ice cream literally transports you back in time.
I missed tasting out the Paan flavour, which I have heard, has bits of betel leaf and gulkand in it. Definitely next time.
A footnote to be added here. As my fellow Zomatian Sarvesh Talreja has put it, "be civil and use the big dustbins they place right by the shop instead of littering on the footpath like an imbecile, yes?"
