1500 hours, 29th June 2014, Sunday:
I have never really been a die hard fan of the Mirah Hospitality group. Any brand of theirs, be it Cafe Mangi or Falafels or The United Sports Bar and Grill has always left me with a tad less than Value for Money kind of experience. Rajdhani Thali was no better.
We entered the restaurant located in the R City mall of Ghatkopar. A medium sized place, the decor was nothing to shout about. There was no association with the Gujarati / Rajasthani culture, going by the murals on the walls and the furniture and the settings. The servers were wearing a quaint orangish jacket and there were a couple of employees who were wearing the Rajasthani Safa. And thats about it - the beginning and the end of the cultural adoption.

We were offered a hand rinsing at the table. We were served in an hitherto unseen, longish, oval platter. Eight katoris and one small dish. The menu of the day was :
Farsan - Amiri khaman ( a finely crumbled yellow dhokla) and Gugra (salted karanji)
Special - Dal Bati churma
Vegetable - Paneer Veg Kolhapuri, Kaju Karea (Kaju Karela), Dum aloo, Jodhpuri Gatta
Dal / Kadi - Panchkuti Dal, Surti Dal and Kadhi
Rice / Khichdi- Steam Rice / Khichdi / Jeera Rice
Indian Bread - Phulka / Puri / Makai Rotla
Dessert of the Day - Moong Dal Halwa / Fruit custard / Kesri Jalebi
Salad - Papaya Dadam
Welcome drink - Masala Chhas
Now the analysis:
The Farsans were superlatively unpremium. The Dal bati was something which we turned away after the first bite. The churma was good though.
The vegetables were all decent. Kaju karela was quite an innovation and had raisins added to it as well.
We were cheated out of the Panchkuti dal, it was simply not there. And so was jeera rice too. Missing, although it was listed in today's menu. Our food was way too less than the one displayed in the glass window.
The phulkas were good but the puris and the makai rotis were hard to bite.
The Desserts again gave us the feeling of just getting it done with. All plain stuff, quantity being shouted in an attempt to suppress the quality in the noise. Maybe they could've served just two items instead of three, but I wish they had included some premium stuff.
The moong dal halwa was good, but the fruit custard was watery with just tid bits of apple and papaya added to it. And while the jalebi was crispy and yummy, we had to make some strong efforts to summon the servers to offer us a second serving. We noticed that while the employees were being extra generous about other items, they were consciously shying away where the sweets were concerned.
The verdict: A let down. A word of advice to the chef Ganga Singh and the promoters, the Goenkas - Spruce up. Innovate. Offer more across the table. The competition is really hotting up. At Rs 415 a thali, I expect more bang for the buck.
The ratings, they go like this:
The Food Quotient : Food Quality 4 / 5, Food Choices 3 / 5, Food Portion ---
The Other Determinants : Location 3.5 / 5, Cleanliness 3.5 / 5, Service 3 / 5
The Hygiene Factors : Ambiance 2.5 / 5, Space quotient 3.5 / 5, Delivery time 4.5 / 5
The Conclusives : Food Price 3 / 5, Honesty 3.5 / 5, Overall Experience 3 / 5, Will I Visit again 2.5 / 5
